Making the announcement on his own Facebook page, Zuckerberg stated that “Our mission is to make the world more open and connected”.
On official Facebook pages you can read a similar line: “Facebook’s mission is to give people the power to share and make the world more open and connected”.
That mission seems fair enough for a social network – of course it aims to give people the power to share and be ‘more connected’. But I’ve recently finished reading David Eggers’ The Circle and that novel clearly outlines a world where a mission statement like that can go horribly wrong.
